4 Advantages of Building A Double Opt In Email List

By Anthony D. Smith | May 5, 2009

Have you ever wondered about the advantages of a double opt in email list? How about if I showed you that single opt in email lists are proven to get more subscribers than double opt in email lists?  If that statement of fact piqued your curiosity at all then continue reading this post.

Here’s four big advantages of building a double opt in email list versus a single opt in email list.

Advantage #1 – A More Targeted Email List

Building an email list of subscribers who are more targeted to your offers is always a good thing and a quality list can outperform a large list any day of the week.  Of course, it’s even better to have a large quality list, but that’s another topic for another post.

If people have to jump through a hoop to get your free stuff then they are more likely to be interested in the subject matter of your email list.  Since they jumped through that extra “hoop” to confirm their email address they are more likely to read your free information or download and use your bonus gifts for subscribing.

You want them to do this because it will condition them to use your information and tips in the future as well.  Use a double opt in email system to build a more targeted list from the get-go.

Advantage #2 – Lower Your List Management Costs

It’s true!  You can spend less money for a more targeted list!  Generally, the more leads you have in your autoresponder system the more money you pay every month to use your autoresponder service.  By only allowing quality subscribers on your email list from the beginning you only pay to send messages to quality subscribers.

Instead of cleaning your email list down the road and asking people who will never buy anything to un-subscribe (and probably ticking off some quality subscribers), building a double opt in email list is like cleaning it from the start.  You just aren’t letting any junk in.  That’s the way it’s gotta be unless you want a massive list, with a massive monthly bill, and a massive amount of low converting email campaigns when you send out your promotional messages.

Advantage #3 – Cut Down On Spam Complaints

Spam complaints are not just bad because they can get your account canceled with your list management service or web host.  They are really bad because can get your IP address or your web host blacklisted on the IP address spam services.  When that happens your email deliverability rates go way down and it can be tough sometimes to get your Ip address removed from the ever increasing amount of blacklists.

Spam complaints aren’t just in form of an actual complaint to your web host or autoresponder company.  They are most often from the click of a button (and those clicking it don’t even realize it).  In most email programs there is a button people can press to say that “this message is spam”.  Or “I don’t want to see messages like this”.  What the ISPs don’t tell you is that this isn’t just so they can cut down on spam in your inbox personally, it’s so they can block all emails from that domain name or ISP from ever reaching your inbox or anyone else’s once again.

If you get a more targeted list of prospects and email leads chances are they won’t do that.  At least, not so much.

Advantage #4 – Attract Higher Quality JVs

You want joint ventures in your business to reach more customers and make more sales.  If you only have a single opt in email list chances are your potential JV partners will frown upon this.  Remember, a double opt in email list much more valuable than single opt in list simply because they actually showed their interest by “jumping through a hoop”.

This is what potential JV partners will look at.  It doesn’t matter that you have 10,000 people on your email list.  What matters is they await the arrival of your emails and read them when they show up.  Oh, yeah, they spend money, too!  If you ever approach me with a JV deal hoping to get more money than the normal affiliate you better have a double opt in email list that is proven to buy.

Joint venture partners also don’t like their products and services associated with lists that receive a high number of spam complaints.  It makes them look bad.

Follow these tips and you will reduce your stress level.  I guarantee it.  You won’t have all the worries everyone with a single opt in list has of too many spam complaints, higher marketing costs, dismal sales, and no JVs to show for their efforts.
